앨범 전면 & 후면

2023년 3월 31일에 발매된 멜라니 마르티네즈의 세번째 정규 앨범.

2. 발매 과정

2019년 멜라니는 같은 이름의 뮤지컬 영화와 함께 두 번째 스튜디오 앨범 K-12를 발표하고 나서 2년 간의 음악 활동을 중단했다. 그 후 모든 인스타그램 게시물을 보관하기 시작했고 2023년 2월 18일에 발매될 예정인 앨범 티저를 올리기 시작했다. 스포티파이에 12초 분량의 노래 일부분을 공개하기도 했다.

2023년 2월 안개가 자욱한 숲 속 버섯의 모습을 보여주는 티저 영상을 공개했는데, 이 버섯의 줄기에는 "RIP Crybaby"라는 문구가 새겨져 있으며 신곡의 일부분이 브금으로 깔려 있다. 이후 여러 티저들이 추가로 게시되었으며 내용은 "부활, 성장하는 배아, 숲에서 알을 품는 것". 한 티저는 "핑크빛 요정 생물로서 알에서 부화하는 모습"을 보여주었다. 이때 공식 웹사이트도 업데이트되어 앨범에 대한 상품이 대중에게 선주문 가능하게 되었다. 앨범의 제목은 공식 웹사이트를 통해 공개되었으머 2023년 3월 31일에 발매되었다.

이 앨범은 ' Cry Baby', ' K-12'와 함께 Cry Baby 3부작을 이루는 앨범이자 공식적으로 그 끝을 장식하게 되는 앨범이다. K-12와 같이 전곡이 수록된 형태로 뮤지컬 영화화가 진행될 예정[1]인 앨범이기도 하다.

앞선 두 앨범 모두 Cry Baby의 일생에 치중한 스토리를 다루고 있었던 것에 비해, 'PORTALS'는 그야말로 "죽음"이라는 다소 극적인 소재를 다루고 있다.[2] 이에 따라 해당 앨범에서 확인할 수 있는 멜라니의 음악적 색의 변화 또한 상당한데, 멜라니의 이전 작업물들에선 들어볼 수 없었던 소프트 록, 힙합, 라틴 음악과 같은 장르들과 멜라니가 기존에 다루던 얼터너티브의 융합된 모습을 보이며, 이 덕분에 코어 팬층과 일반 대중들, 두 마리 토끼를 모두 잡을 수 있게 되는 긍정적 영향을 주기도 하였다.

3. 성적

3월 25일 리드싱글 DEATH를 발매했고, 빌보드 싱글차트 95위로 데뷔하여 멜라니의 첫 번째 빌보드 차트인 싱글이 되었다.
앨범 발매 하루 전인 3월 30일에 두번째 싱글 VOID를 공개, 빌보드 싱글 차트 61위로 데뷔하며 리드싱글보다 더 높은 순위로 데뷔했다. 두터운 팬덤을 지녔음에도 마이너한 음악적 색깔 때문에 빌보드 차트와는 연이 없었던 멜라니가 하위권에라도 데뷔를 했다는 건 그만큼 화력이 세졌다는 뜻이다.
앨범 발매 후 상당한 화력을 보여주며 순수 판매량 99,000장 포함,무려 첫 주 초동 142,000장을 기록하며 빌보드 200 앨범 차트 2위로 데뷔했다. 이는 전작인 K-12의 초동의 3배에 가까운 수치이고 웬만한 메인스트림 팝가수들의 성적에 버금가는 판매량이며 1위를 하고도 남을 수치지만 모건 월렌의 독주로 인해 아쉽게 2위가 최고 순위가 되었다. 그래도 멜라니의 팬덤이 상당히 커졌음을 보여주는 결과.
발매 2주차에는 앨범 차트 5위, 3주차에는 10위를 기록하며 3주 연속 10위안에 진입 시켜 괄목한 성적을 보여주고 있는 중.

2023년 3월 25일, 앨범의 수록곡들 중 최초로 싱글컷된 곡이다.
제목에서부터 알 수 있듯이, 직설적으로 Cry Baby의 죽음에 대해 다루고 있다. 뮤직비디오에 등장하는 5명의 댄서들이 K-12 영화에 등장하는 Cry Baby 일행 5명(안젤리타, 셀레스트, 매그놀리아, 플레르, 벤)을 상징하는 것이 아니냐는 추측이 팬덤 내에서 돌기도 하였으나 이에 대해 공식적으로 밝혀진 것은 없다.

DEATH에 이어 두 번째 싱글로 발매된 곡이다.
첫 번째 트랙인 DEATH가 Cry Baby의 죽음 그 자체만을 다루고 있었다면, VOID는 죽음 이후 사후 세계에서 방황하는 모습을 담고 있다. 멜라니의 디스코그래피 중 최초로 멜라니 본인이 작사 작곡 모두를 맡은 곡이며, 그래서인지 각종 인터뷰가 있을 때마다 유난히 VOID를 띄워주는 분위기이고 프로모 또한 PORTALS 앨범 전체보단 이 곡 하나에 초점을 맞춰 진행한다.
뮤직비디오가 2023 VMA에 "Best Visual Effects" 로 노미네이트 되기도 하였으나, 아쉽게도 본 상은 테일러 스위프트가 Anti-Hero의 뮤직비디오로 수상하게 되었다.
정식으로 발매되기 전, 이미 몇 차례 데모 버전이 팬에 의해 유출되었던 적이 있다. #[3]

LARYNX 는 후두를 뜻하는데 제목에서 알수있듯이 BATTLE OF THE LARYNX 는 후두전투이다 이 노래의 해석을 보면 오늘밤 내 후두와 싸우지마 라는 가사가 있고 ''오락실 옆에서 잠들어", "난 너가 선을 넘을때까지 침묵할거야"라는 가사를 보아 이 노래는 게임을 하는데 욕을 하는사람을 보고 만든곡이라고 말이 나오고있다.

'CONTORTIONIST'는 곡예사를 의미하는데, 가사의 내용과 연계하면 굉장히 섬뜩한 내용의 제목이된다. 연인과 관계를 가지면서 기괴한 체위를 강요받고, 그걸 억지로 하는 과정에서 온몸이 뒤틀리고 부러지는것을 마치 서커스의 곡예사 같다고 비유한 표현.[5] 노래 중간중간에 삽입되어있는 '우지끈'하고 부러지는 소리가 포인트다.

멜라니의 설명에 따르면 과거 자신이 겪었던 이기적이고, 자기중심적인 사람과의 관계에 대한 노래라고 한다. 이 설명에 기반해서 MOON CYCLE과 마찬가리로 올리버를 언급하는 곡이라는 추측이 있었는데 MOON CYCLE은 멜라니 본인이 딱 잘라서 아니라고 직접 해명한 것에 비해, EVIL에 대해서는 별다른 언급이 없었기에 팬덤 내에서는 여전히 올리버 디스곡으로 여겨지고 있는 중이다.

해당 앨범 활동기의 멜라니는 뮤직비디오, 앨범 자켓, 공식 석상은 물론 라이브 무대 또한 눈 네 개의 분홍색 크리처의 모습으로 등장하는데, 이에 대해서는 팬덤 내외로 다소 의견이 갈리는 편이다. 앞선 두 앨범 모두 나쁘지 않은 성적을 보이며 멜라니의 얼굴이 브랜드로서의 가치를 가졌음에도 (본인의 얼굴을 전부 가리는 분장을 한 채)이를 완전히 뒤엎고 새로운 모습으로 대중들 앞에 나선다는 실험적인 행보에 응원을 보내는 이들도 있고, 그래도 라이브 공연 등은 멜라니의 모습을 보고 싶은 팬들이 참석하는 곳인데, 얼굴을 전부 가린 채 감정 전달도 제대로 되지 않는 모습으로 공연에 임하는 것은 것은 옳지 않다며 비판적인 시각으로 보는 이들도 있다.
