박찬욱 감독의 12번째 장편 영화.

미국 소설가 도널드 웨스트레이크의 작품인 소설 《액스》를 원작으로 한 코스타 가브라스 감독의 영화 〈 액스, 취업에 관한 위험한 안내서〉를 리메이크한 버전이다.

‘다 이루었다’고 느낄 만큼 삶이 만족스러웠던 회사원 ‘유만수’가 덜컥 해고된다. 아내와 두 자식을 보호하기 위해, 어렵게 장만한 집을 지키기 위해, 그는 재취업을 향한 자신만의 전쟁을 준비한다.
정리해고 된 남자 만수가 인간 사냥에 나선다. 평범한 중산층 남자가 25년간 일해 온 제지 회사에서 하루아침에 정리해고를 당한다. 그는 잡지에 가짜 구인 광고를 내고 재취업을 위해 자신보다 능력 있고 젊고 잘생긴 다섯 명을 제거하기로 결심한다. 무력감과 희망 사이를 오가며 자신의 경쟁자들을 하나씩 살해하는데...

9. 기타

  • 원래 이 영화는 박찬욱 감독이 오랜 시간 준비한 작품이었고 할리우드에서 영어 영화로 촬영할 생각이었으나 2017년 투자가 되지 않아 무산되었다. 그러다 2024년 투자가 되어 한국 영화로 제작이 된다.
  • 처음 영화화하려고 구상하던 시절 박찬욱이 직접 원작 소설의 추천사를 써주며 이 영화의 제목을 '모가지'로 하려고 했다고 밝혔다.
  • 한동안 <도끼> 라는 가제로 불리다가 현재 이 제목으로 정해졌다.
  • 2017년에 촬영하려고 했던 영화의 시나리오 작업에 정서경과 이경미가 참여했었다. 다만 현재 제작중인 영화에서 그 각본이 쓰일지는 확실치 않다. 일단 크레딧에 정서경이 빠진 것으로 보아 정서경은 참여하지 않는 것으로 추정된다.
