로마 제국은 특정 민족만의 국가가 아닌 다민족 보편제국이라서, 로마인이 아닌 로마족이라고 하는 것은 상당히 어색한 표현이다.
다만 아예 근거가 없는 건 아닌 게 10세기부터는 기록에 '로마인'이 마치 ' 아르메니아인'처럼 종족 개념으로 나오기 시작하며, 11세기 후반의 저작물 중 하나에는 영어로 번역하면 'a Roman by birth', 즉 '출생에 의한 로마인'이라는 대목이 나오는데[1], 근현대적 의미의 국적 개념이 없던 중세 시절, 저 구절은 종족적인 의미의 로마인, 즉 로마족(Roman ethnicity)이라는 개념으로 보는 학계의 의견이 있다.
