빌보드 핫 100에서 2주 연속 1위를 기록했다. 1985년 빌보드 핫 100 연말 차트에선 14위, 1958년~2018년 빌보드 핫 100 올타임 차트에선 442위에 올랐다.6. 21세기의 혹평(?)
2000년대 이후로 이 노래에 대한 재평가가 이뤄졌는데 안좋은 쪽으로 재평가가 이뤄졌다
2005년, 블렌더라는 잡지에서 "역사상 최악의 노래"를 선정하는 이벤트를 열었는데 이 노래가 1위를 차지했다. 이후 2011년 롤링 스톤지에서 "최악의 80년대 노래" 선정 이벤트에서도 1위를 차지했고, GQ에서도 "역사상 최악의 노래"로 선정되었다.
겉으로 듣기엔 대중적이고 신나는 이 노래가 이정도로 안좋은 재평가를 받은 요인은 세가지가 꼽힌다.
- 노래 가사의 내용은 거대 음악회사에 의해서 뮤지션들이 노래하던 음악클럽이 사라지는걸 개탄한다는 것인데, 아이러니하게도 정작 이 노래는 거대 음반회사인 워너뮤직에서 나왔고, 노래 자체도 상업적이고 대중적인 스타일이기 때문에 노래의 내용과 그 내용이 담긴 형식이 상호 모순된다는 비판이 나온다. 이 부분은 스타십의 멤버들도 인정한 부분이다.
- 노래중에서 "Marconi plays the mambo, listen to the radio"라는 부분이 나오는데, 사실 이부분의 가사가 "mambo" 인지, "mamba"인지 논란이 있다. 작사가가 의도적이었는지 실수였는지는 몰라도 처음에 "mamba"로 나왔는데 보컬은 의도적으로 이게 "mambo"의 오타라 생각하고 바꿔불렀지만 뭔가 입에 붙지 않아서 결국 원가사대로 부르게 되었다 한다. 작사가가 이 부분에 대해서 밝히지 않아서 설왕설래가 많은것도 안좋은 평가의 요인중 하나로 꼽힌다.
- 노래중에서 "Who cares, they're always changing corporation names"(누가 신경쓸까, 회사들의 이름은 계속 바뀌기만 해) 라는 부분이 나오는데 이 노래를 부른 밴드인 스타십은 원래는 60년대 샌프란시스코에서 결성된 반문화 운동 성향의 사이키델릭 록 밴드인 "제퍼슨 에어플레인"이 그 기원이었다. "제퍼슨 에어플레인"이 해체후, 밴드의 주축 멤버들이 새로 "제퍼슨 스타십"을 결성했다. 이후 원년 멤버인 리더 폴 켄트너가 갈수록 상업화 되던 밴드에 실망해 탈퇴하면서 "제퍼슨 스타십" 이름을 쓰지 못하게 해 제퍼슨을 뺀 "스타십"으로 남게되었다. 가사에서 말하는 부분이 음반회사들에 대한 비판이라지만 결국 따지고보면 당신들도 상업화되면서 밴드 이름을 계속 바꾸지 않았냐는 비아냥을 들은것.
본질적으로 이런 혹평의 근원은 6-70년대의 반문화 운동등을 이끌던 락 밴드들이 80년대에 들어오며 전자음악등의 디지털들을 도입했고, 그러면서 소위 우드스탁 페스티벌로 대표되는 6-70년대 음악에 익숙하던 세대들에겐 이런 변화가 변절로 다가온게 원인이란게 중론이다. 스타십 뿐만 아니라 6-70년대에 사이키델릭, 프로그레시브락을 하던 뮤지션들이 80년대 새로운 스타일 소위 뉴 웨이브로 변화를 시도했고 이걸로 상업적 성공을 거뒀지만 기존 스타일을 좋아하던 이들에겐 실망으로 돌아온것이 근본적 원인이란것. 하지만 한편으로 음악이 늘 정체되어있을수 없으며, 뮤지션들이 활동을 존속하려면 어느정도의 상업적 성공도 있어야 하지 않느냔 반론도 제기된다. 그런점을 감안하면 21세기의 혹평은 너무 편협된 시각이 아니냔 지적도 나온다.
